Past Conferences

International Conference on Advancements in Computing was successfully conducted for 4 consecutive years. The last three ICAC conferences provided platforms to present 80+ papers each from both local and international authors. These papers were presented under numerous tracks such as Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Data Analytics, Distributed Systems, Information, and Cyber Security, Information systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer networks and data communication, Internet of Things, Robotics & intelligent systems, and Soft Computing.  IEEE Sri Lankan section provided technical sponsorship for the conferences and more than 100 participants participated in the event.

ICAC 2024

The 6th International Conference on Advancements in Computing (ICAC 2024) was successfully held on December 12–13, 2024, at Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Technically co-sponsored by IEEE and several IEEE communities, the conference provided a dynamic platform for academic scholars and industry professionals to present their latest research findings, innovations, and practical applications in Computing. With a strong focus on bridging the horizons in Artificial Intelligence to drive the future of computing, ICAC 2024 fostered invaluable knowledge exchange and collaboration, elevating the research culture and promoting impactful discussions on advancements in the field.

The conference featured distinguished keynote speakers who shared groundbreaking insights into various domains of computing. Prof. William Wong, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction Engineering at Auckland University of Technology, delivered a keynote on visibility and cognitive engineering in user interfaces, highlighting its critical role in system profitability, safety, integrity, security, accountability, and auditability. Assoc. Prof. Nalin Arachchilage from RMIT University, Australia, explored the importance of privacy engineering in software applications, emphasizing its significance in modern digital ecosystems. Dr. Nickson M. Karie from Curtin University, Australia, discussed the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in driving innovation and human potential, shedding light on AI’s profound impact across industries.

Complementing the keynote sessions, ICAC 2024 hosted five specialized workshops, led by experts in various computing domains. Prof. William Wong and Assoc. Prof. Danielle Lottridge conducted a session on “Assessing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) at Scale,” exploring strategies for evaluating complex cognitive abilities in digital learning environments. Dr. Dinuka Sahabandu led a hands-on workshop on “TinyML in Action,” demonstrating the integration of machine learning in resource-constrained edge devices. Dr. Mahima Weerasinghe provided insights into “Exploring Spiking Neural Networks,” offering a deeper understanding of biologically inspired neural computation. Dr. Pasan Fernando conducted a session on “Exploring Biological Data with Bioinformatics,” guiding participants through the exploration of biological data using computational techniques. Prof. Nuwan Kodagoda and Prof. Roshan Ragel delivered an engaging workshop on “Unleashing the Power of Generative AI in Research,” illustrating how AI-driven models can revolutionize knowledge discovery and innovation. Additionally, a one-day summer school program, “HCI Master Class,” led by Prof. William Wong, provided in-depth training on designing interactive and visual tools to enhance decision-making, fostering the development of more intuitive and efficient user interfaces.

Concluding another successful edition, ICAC 2024 saw 99 local and international researchers present and publish their research findings, with all accepted papers included in IEEE Xplore. The conference reaffirmed its role as a catalyst for advancing computing research, strengthening global collaborations, and shaping the future of the field.

ICAC 2023

The ICAC2023, the 5th International Conference on Advancements in Computing 2023 (ICAC2023) which is taking place on 7th and 8th of December 2023. This conference was technically co-sponsored by IEEE and provided an open forum for both academics and industry professionals to showcase their latest findings, research output, and practical deployments in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology. The primary aim of the ICAC is to improve the research culture and the quality of research conducted by researchers from Sri Lanka.

 

The proceeding were eminent high-profile keynote speakers Prof. Kazuo Kiguchi, Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University, Japan and vice-president of the Robotics Society of Japan who addressed the real time human motion intention estimation methods based on biological signals such as EMG or EEG and the generation methods of artificial motion sensation using the phenomenon of kinesthetic illusion. His topic was titled ‘Real Time Estimation of Human Motion Intention and Generation of Artificial Motion Sensation’. Prof. Roshan Ragel, Professor, Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya in his address ‘the evolving symbiosis between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT)’ highlighted on emerging trends and possible future directions.

Four  workshops were conducted by Dr. Nalinda Kulathunga, Prof. Chathura R. De Silva,  Dr. Kutila Gunasekara discussing the Understanding Adversarial Learning through Generative Models and Internet of Things for Everyday Life.

More than 100 local and international researchers presented and published their research work in IEEE Xplore at the end of the successful physical conference.

ICAC 2022

The ICAC2022, which is the 4th International Conference on Advancements in Computing, was held virtually from December 9th  to December 11th , 2022. This conference was technically co-sponsored by IEEE and provided an open forum for both academics and industry professionals to showcase their latest findings, research output, and practical deployments in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology. The primary aim of the ICAC is to improve the research culture and the quality of research conducted by researchers from Sri Lanka. 

The proceeding were eminent high-profile keynote speakers Prof. Hossein Sarrafzadeh, Director, Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity Research, Education, and Outreach (CREO) who addressed the current global issues and cybersecurity threats of national significance and the relevant research that can help reduce the risks globally. His topic was titled ‘Cybersecurity threats, opportunities, and possibilities for international collaboration in research and education. Prof. Janaka Bandara Ekanayake, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya in his address ‘ICT infrastructure for Solar Future’ highlighted the barriers, solutions, and ICT solutions to achieve a solar future. 

Four  workshops were conducted by Mr. Priyal Walpita, Dr. Dinidu Harshanath,  Mr. Manuranga Perera , Dr. Dharshana Kasthurirathna, Mr. Menan Velayuthan and Mr. Sanka Mohottala discussing themes specific to conference topics providing a unique convergence of learning.

ICAC 2021

Prof. Elizabeth Ann Broadbent from the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Auckland, and Prof. William Wong from Middlesex University, London were keynote speakers of ICAC 2021 while Mr. Anura De Alwis – Chief digital economy officer of ICTA, Mr. Arjuna Nanayakkara – Head of Shared Services Centre of LSEG, Dr. Upendra Pieris- Chief executive officer of OREL IT PVT LTD joined hands with the conference as Industry experts to discuss “Value of innovation and invention for Sri Lanka IT/BPM industry ”. Three workshops were held which are titled”Artificial Intelligence Research in Practice”, “Cattle vs. Pets: The adoption of Kubernetes in Enterprise” and “Reinforcement Learning – A Premier”.

ICAC 2019

International Conference on Advancements in Computing was launched by the Faculty of Computing in 2019. The conference was held from 5th to 7th December under the theme of “Advancements in Computing”.

Professor Iain Murray, Distinguished professor attached to Faculty of Science and Engineering, Curtin University, Australia, and Prof. Sarath Kodagoda, Directorattached to Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology, University of Technology Sydney, Australia joined the conference as keynote speakers to share their expertise. During the course of the conference three workshops were held on the topics; “Robot Operating Systems”, “Offensive red teaming” and “The internet of things”.
